Genmaicha is a Japanese Green Tea with brown rice kernels. The blend of the rice and the green tea balances out the astringent flavor with a warm nutty flavor of roasted rice. Sometimes it is referred to as “popcorn tea”. There are a lot of different origin stories of Genmaicha, some dating as far back to the 15th Century Japan, but the most probable and common story of Genmaicha is that toasted rice was added to Green Tea in the 1900s as a way of stretching tea during times of hardship. It is high in antioxidants and has an array of carotenoids and ascorbic acid.
Most commonly enjoyed before meals, Genmaicha can be enjoyed any time of day. It contains caffeine so it is a great replacement for coffee in the morning or as an afternoon pick me up.
